THE Philippines is ranked 56th among 132 countries in the 2023 Global Innovation Index (GII), three spots up from 59th in 2022, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has announced.
The 2022 ranking was a huge drop from 51st in 2021.In the last four years, the Philippines consistently performed better in innovation outputs compared to innovation inputs, according to the WIPO.This year, the country improved its ranking to 69th place in innovation inputs, compared to 76th in 2022, 72nd in 2021 and 70th in 2020.
For innovation outputs, the Philippines scored 52nd place in 2023, compared to 51st in 2022, 40th in 2021 and 41st in 2020.Across the seven areas of GII, the Philippines ranks highest in Business sophistication at 38th; Knowledge and technology outputs at 46th and Market sophistication at 55th.However, the Philippines needs further improvement in human capital and research, placing 88th in 2023 from 86th in 2022, and in infrastructure at 86th, from 81st in 2022.
