Petr Klima, first NHL player to defect from Czech Republic, dead at 58

Klima was found dead, unexpectedly, in his home in the city of Chomutov in his native Czechia, the Czech Ice Hockey Federation confirmed.

Klima is perhaps best remembered for scoring the game-winning goal in triple overtime of Game 1 of the 1990 Stanley Cup Final to give the Oilers a 3-2 win over the Bruins.

Former Stanley Cup champion Petr Klima was unexpectedly found dead in his home in the Czech Republic.“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Oilers alum Petr Klima & extend our condolences to his family & all loved ones,” the Oilers tweeted.“The NHL mourns the passing of Czech legend Petr Klima, who scored 313 goals across 13 NHL seasons,” the NHL said in a statement.
