The Midnight Oil's second solo effort is out March, 2024 and he'll hit the road the same time with his band The Alter Egos.
So, how does it sound? Well, last week Garrett shared the album's title track, which is a slower, softer meditation on "kinship and conscience."
There's yawning guitars and poetic words that capture the scale of our nation, and our sad, enduring truths:Part 1 sounds much more familiar, ambling along a dusty rhythmic stomp with Garrett's familiarly commanding vocals and gang-chant vocals urgingPart 2 swells from an acoustic guitar into a haunting instrumental that frames a spoken-word performance where Garrett reflects: '
I imagine a court of climate criminals… the best jargon, delivering profits from frying the planet and roasting us alive.'As you can probably tell, thematically and lyrically, the 70-year-old national treasure has lost none of the fire in the belly.
"There's still a bit of that in this album too of course but generally these songs are reflective of the special things we need to cherish; the natural world as well as our always spinning internal compass, that helps us navigate the unruly passage of life." and The Alter Egos. There's also special appearances from cellist Freya Schack-Arnott, Ollie Thorpe on pedal steel, and backing vocals from two of Peter's daughters – May and Grace Garrett.
