Victorian Liberal leader John Pesutto has conceded the Warrandyte by-election is"really unpredictable" as his party battles to retain the seat.

"It's a really unpredictable environment because we've got 12 candidates this time with no incumbent," Mr Pesutto told Sky News Australia's Simon Love on Friday. "Last time in 2022 we had Ryan Smith who was a very well regarded and highly respected local member who'd been there a while so he had a strong vote.

The seat sits on a margin of 4.3 per cent but the Labor Party has opted against running a candidate, as they did in the Narracan supplementary election in late January. to be against splashing out up to $500,000 on an electorate which has been held by the Liberals since 1988.
