Nine-candidate race is partly a referendum on polarizing incumbent Gary Eichelberger, but growth challenges will put a host of issues on board's plate.

Eight of the nine candidates for Republican nominations for Cumberland County commissioner made their pitches to voters in Upper Allen Township earlier this week. The upcoming primary for two Republican nominations for Cumberland County commissioner is like a two-part exam.

Another of Eichelberger’s critics is his fellow Republican incumbent, DiFilippo, who believes the current board of commissioners has a great story of success to tell, but decided long ago that he would not run with Eichelberger again. Kathy Silcox did make an unsuccessful bid for county judge in 2021, but Nate Silcox rejected Eichelberger’s posts Thursday, saying his wife has made no final decisions on a future run for judge, and if she did she will do it on her own merits and qualifications.

“He sided with Gov. Wolf on every aspect of that,” Silcox said. “There was no questioning. Never pushing the envelope.” Beam told PennLive he wants to give voters a choice, and he’s willing to leave the other questions to God: “I’m not looking for a job. I’m not looking for a career,” he explained. “If he wants me in there, he’ll put me in, and he’ll see a way to keep me there.”

Reminded that those proposed election reforms would break existing state law, Troy Beam said he knows his position would likely force a court battle, but “it’s going to take somebody to step out and be the first person to do something nobody else wants to do.” Like all the candidates in this race, he said he will continue to press for the prioritization of the widening of Interstate-81 to six lanes throughout Cumberland County, arguing that’s the best thing that could happen to the county’s transportation infrastructure at this point. There is no denying Eichelberger has lived into the role of a county commissioner over the last 20 years.

Both incumbents also defended their 2021 votes to sell the county-owned nursing home, which they concluded was necessary to protect the county from having to make annual subsidies to cover operating deficits. Ward, in an interview with PennLive, didn’t stake out definitive positions on many issues, promising instead to listen and learn.

The pair says they’ve had enough of “career politician” Eichelberger and they don’t believe DiFilippo has proven to be conservative enough to represent Republican voters. “I’ve seen a lot of infighting over the last decade; the last four years in particular... and as a township commissioner and as a resident I’ve gotten tired of it,” Silcox said. “There’s a lot of great things that we can do if we work together here as Republicans.”Gembusia, a longtime township supervisor in South Middleton, is scratching an itch that dates to 2011, when he first ran for county commissioner in tandem with then-incumbent Barb Cross.
