OPINION: A small-government ex-treasurer who had spent years fighting public service pay rises, the premier failed to produce a persuasive inflation strategy.
From Bankstown to Botany, from Coogee to Camden, the voters of NSW – urban, suburban and rural – decided they didn’t trust a big-spending and even bigger-promising Coalition government to fix the economic turmoil disrupting their lives.

Compared with Perrottet, Labor leader Chris Minns was a budget Grinch. He opposed grand Liberal projects, including new train lines, subsidised savings accounts for children and urban beautification projects.At the same time, voters were convinced Minns would do a better job responding to the price increases, including food, power and petrol, that are making millions poorer. Complaining about road tolls didn’t hurt his support among commuters.The irony must have frustrated the Liberal leader.
Terrigal, a coastal seat of retirees and Sydneysiders’ weekenders, delivered Labor not one booth in 2019. This election it may fall to the new government, which received a 15 per cent swing.
