NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has hit out at a council decision to impose blanket changes to speed limits in the Sydney CBD, declaring 'we have to speed our city up not slow it down'.

"We have to speed our city up not slow it down," he told 2GB's Ben Fordham on Tuesday morning."We are a global city we can't slow it down."

Councillor Jess Scully said road trauma was the most common cause of death for Australian children and emphasised the impact of accidents on the community. "It shouldn't be necessary what she's [Ms Scully] doing but it is because we've had governments that failed to take the action they say they're going to take," she said.Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore supported the plan to lower speed limits in the CBD and criticised past state governments for not doing enough.
