The head of the British navy says he cannot envisage the United Kingdom ever permanently deploying an aircraft carrier to the Indo-Pacific after being challenged about Britain’s minimal presence in the region by Australia’s former high commissioner to the UK George Brandis.
“The prime minister and Prime Minister Kishida agreed on the importance of the G7 having a unified approach on China, recognising the systemic challenge China poses to our collective economic security and regional stability,” a Downing Street spokesperson said in a statement. Brandis, now a professor in the practice of national security, policy and law at ANU’s National Security College, questioned Key about Britain’s “relatively minimal presence” in the region.“With respect, allowing for the fact that there are many demands on scarce resources, the presence of two patrol boats in the whole of the Indo-Pacific does not seem to meet the mark of a global strategy,” Brandis said.
But he said the new type 31 frigates, due to be delivered by 2028, would be the sort of vessel that could operate globally and pointed to a recent agreement between Britain and France to create a “persistent European carrier strike group presence” by co-ordinating the deployment of France’s Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier with Britain’s two carriers.“There is clearly a government desire to be able to deploy carriers into the region in the future,” he said.

Quad Leaders’ Summit cancellation indication of ‘weakness and turmoil’ in US politicsThe cancellation of the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Sydney undercuts the United States’ “credibility” in the Indo-Pacific region, Perth USAsia Centre CEO Gordon Flake says. Mr Flake’s comments come after United States President Joe Biden made the decision to postpone his trip to Australia, over negotiations to raising the debt ceiling in the US. “To be clear, this shouldn’t be seen as a lack of US commitment to the Quad or lack of US commitment to Australia,” Mr Flake told Sky News Australia. “It really is more an indication of the ongoing weakness and turmoil in US domestic politics.”
