Voluntary assisted dying is legal in almost every state in Australia, but in Queensland the terms are broader.

In the first six months of 2023, 591 people applied to legally end their lives, and 245 have done so – more than one a day, a report released this week has revealed. To be eligible in Queensland, you must be expected to die in 12 months. In other states it's half that .In Queensland, you must be diagnosed with a disease, illness or medical condition which is advanced, progressive, causing "intolerable" suffering, and be expected to die within 12 months.

The number of people who have applied for VAD reflects "the more inclusive criteria" of Queensland's laws, according to Dying with Dignity Queensland president Sheila Sim."Time to death will make a difference, and also the fact that our doctors can raise the question of VAD with their patient – whereas in Victoria a doctor is not permitted to do that."

The patient then has their first assessment, where that practitioner decides whether they are eligible. If they are eligible , they are then referred to another practitioner for a consulting assessment. All but five people were found to be eligible after this second assessment. The majority — 88 per cent — made their second request, and 83 per cent made their third and final request. The median number of days between the first and final request was 17.5.
