Pennsylvania was ranked as one of the worst states at spelling in a recent study.

Researchers sent out a survey to over 1,800 people across the country to better assess their grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Once respondents’ answers came in, they were graded and averaged out to determine a state’s score.

While Pennsylvania was found to be generally okay in grammar — tying with Utah in the 31st overall spot with a score of 82.9 out of 100 — the state was found to be in second“In this study, we took some of the most commonly misspelled words and asked Americans to select the correct spelling,” the study explains. “First on our list was ‘accommodate’ with just 58% choosing the correct spelling. 31% of people selected ‘accomodate’ and 11% ‘acommodate.

“Next up is ‘relevant’ with 79% of people selecting the correct spelling. Mixing up which letters go where was common, with about 1 in 9 people replacing the ‘a’ with an ‘e’ to write ‘relevent’ and another 5% selecting ‘relevant.’ The final 5% were a bit further off picking ‘revelant.’”If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
