James Franklin addressed the QB battle, JB Nelson's role and special teams competitions.

Penn State head coach James Franklin looks over the offense during practice on Aug. 23, 2023. Joe Hermitt | [email protected] Aug. 23, 2019, Penn State announced Sean Clifford as its starting quarterback. On the same date four years later, the Nittany Lions didn’t name his successor.

Wednesday was the last time local media will meet with Franklin before his Week One press conference next Tuesday. So unless the program announces the news on its own, Penn State will seemingly go into game week without identifying a starting quarterback. Franklin also mentioned that the addition of veteran specialists has upped the competition level on special teams. Penn State brought in Columbia kicker Alex Felkins to battle with Sander Sahaydak. FAU transfer Riley Thompson is competing with Alex Bacchetta at punter.

If Tengwall misses extended time, expect JB Nelson to fill in at left guard. Nelson, a 2022 signee from Lackawanna College, redshirted but appeared in four games last fall, seeing significant action against Indiana. The Nittany Lions’ “touchdown kings” of camp were Allar and wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith, who is poised to be the No. 1 option in the passing game.
