The morning of Jan. 28, Jennifer Homendy heard on the news aboutFor Homendy, a graduate of Penn State Harrisburg and the chairwoman of the National Transportation Safety Board, extraordinary disasters are part of the routine.

“It’s interesting in life, one thing often leads to another,” she said. “I always feel like at least in my life, if things are meant to be, they’re meant to be.”Raised in Connecticut and Virginia, she started college at Messiah College, now Messiah University, in Mechanicsburg. “I felt that it was a miracle that no one died,” she said. “There were definitely injuries but it could have been so much worse than it was.”

She tries to wait until 6 a.m.
