You star Penn Badgley says the masturbation scene in the show's pilot was originally much grosser. Narrated by Badgley's character Joe Goldberg, Netflix's You gives viewers access to the mind of a stalker as Joe seeks out a new target every season and stalks her in an attempt to seduce her. The objects of his obsession often end up dead, which never seems to deter him from seeking out new prey and ramping up his monstrous behaviors.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY During a conversation with Team Coco, Badgley opens up about a particularly disturbing scene in the pilot episode of You, which saw Joe masturbating on a street corner while watching Beck through her window.
“One of the things that I struggled with a lot when I first took the role is that I don’t want to lean away from the horrific aspects of this person, I don’t want to be, as we’ve said, it’s hard not to glorify actually almost anything you see on camera, so I’m gonna just be conscious of that. So…what I did, up until the director came and was like, ‘You can’t do that anymore,’ is that I was slow, and my eyes were open.

Because of this, Badgley's interpretation of Joe and commitment to putting his vileness at the forefront is essential, showing that he is dedicated to keeping Joe from becoming a character that viewers root for.
