The celebration of Thaipusam in Penang , Malaysia, is proceeding smoothly with strong security and traffic management, according to Penang Police Chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad. 1,500 police personnel have been deployed over the three-day festival, ensuring public safety and the smooth flow of crowds. As of this morning, no criminal incidents or reports have been received, but security measures remain heightened as a precautionary measure.
\Hamzah estimated that 200,000 people attended the festival yesterday, with numbers expected to peak later today and into the night. He urged visitors to adhere to regulations to ensure a harmonious and enjoyable experience for all. \Hamzah, accompanied by his deputy Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin, spent nearly an hour inspecting the Thaipusam celebrations. They visited the elaborately decorated Thaneer Panthal stalls along the route to the Sri Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani temple and interacted with Hindu devotees. Hamzah also distributed refreshments to visitors at the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) Thaneer Panthal. Meanwhile, a devotee, M. Shamala, 32, commended the police's excellent security measures in maintaining public order. She said the presence of numerous officers at every location made her feel safe despite the crowded conditions. Shamala, a head chef at a hotel, shared that she had attended the festival since age 12 and had previously heard reports of crimes like robbery, theft, and missing children, especially at the temple. However, she expressed relief that such incidents were no longer prevalent
