The Penang Chingay Parade 2024 drew thousands of people to George Town, showcasing the vibrant cultural heritage of the island through captivating performances and festive floats.
Thousands of local and foreign people participated in the Penang Chingay Parade 2024 yesterday. The parade commenced at Jalan Johor in Padang Brown and traversed Jalan Datuk Keramat, Jalan Penang , Lebuh Chulia, and Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling before culminating at the Esplanade. 41 teams, encompassing Chingay flag bearers, aerobics groups, bands, Muay Thai and silambam exponents, and floats, entertained the crowds.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai emphasized that the parade symbolizes cooperation and appreciation for the shared cultural heritage of various races, fostering a stronger community. Spectators were captivated by spellbinding performances of Chingay flag acrobatics, lion dances, dragon dances, and martial arts displays by participants of diverse ethnicities, including Chinese, Malay, and Indian individuals. Trader Mohamed Azizul Abu Bakar Sitiz, 29, shared his eight-year journey mastering Chingay flag manipulation, starting at age seven. He is a member of the Sungai Pinang Chingay Association, which comprises over 20 multiracial individuals aged 18 to 40. He highlighted the skill and balance required to handle the bamboo flagpole amidst wind currents and the potential dangers of a slip-up.
