The Penang state government has been actively supporting non-Islamic places of worship (RIBIs) by providing financial allocations for their upkeep and renovation. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that RM13.6 million has been approved for RIBIs since 2016, with 333 applications receiving funding.
The Penang state government has approved RM13.6 million in allocations for non-Islamic places of worship ( RIBI ) since 2016, according to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. He revealed that the special RIBI fund committee has approved a total of 333 applications from RIBI s in the state during this period. Today, a total of 54 RIBI s received RM1.884 million for this year.
Among the recipients, 26 are Taoist temples, four are Buddhist temples, 10 are Hindu temples, seven are Christian organizations and seven are other religious institutions. Chow explained that the special RIBI fund was established using funds collected by the city councils from contributions by developers for RIBI during applications for planning approvals. He mentioned that due to limited funds, there is a maximum allocation of RM50,000 per RIBI. Each application is evaluated based on their need to upgrade or renovate their facilities and property. As the funds are disbursed annually to various applicants, Chow stated that the fund is diminishing. He added that the state has committed to topping up the funds annually. This commitment aligns with the Unity State government's manifesto in the 2023 state elections to allocate a total of RM10 million to RIBIs until 2028. Earlier, state exco and special RIBI fund committee chairman Lim Siew Khim shared that a total of 97 applications worth RM3.6 million were approved in 2024. She emphasized the importance of this fund in assisting RIBIs in Penang and alleviating their financial burden in maintaining their premises
