Pedro Rodriguez, a crucial figure in the establishment of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, died Thursday.Pedro Rodriguez, shown near the Guadalupe Theatre, led the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center from 1983 to 1998. He died Thursday.Rodriguez led the organization from 1983 to 1998, coming in just one year after it had been founded.
"We built one of the biggest and I think most important Chicano arts centers in the nation during those 15 years," said Juan Tejeda, who created the Guadalupe's music program and worked side-by-side with Rodriguez throughout his tenure. Even after he resigned from the Guadalupe, he continued to work for the organization as a consultant, and also stepped in a few times to guide it during transitions from one director to another.
"The Guadalupe was a source of tremendous pride for Pedro," said Belinda Menchaca, whom Rodriguez hired to run the organization's dance program."We want to honor Pedro for his incredible legacy," said Menchaca, who now heads the Guadalupe's education [email protected] | Twitter: @DeborahMartinEN
