PBA commissioner Willie Marcial is awaiting a call from the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas any time this week to discuss the basketball federation's next move following the decision of Chot Reyes to step down from the Gilas coaching post as well as the unavailability of other members of the national team for the upcoming 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
'We're expecting SBP's Al Panlilio to call a meeting any time soon, because we just have to see how his schedule will be this week,' Marcial told The Manila Times in Filipino.Marcial said he knows the urgency of the matter considering that the Asian Games is set to start on September 23.Asked if the PBA is willing to suggest sending a team instead to the quadrennial basketball games, the league commissioner said he wouldn't want to go ahead of the SBP's plans.
The national side, then coached by Yeng Guiao, saw Jordan Clarkson make his debut in a Gilas uniform for the first time. The Philippines lost narrow margins against South Korea and China and went on to finish fifth in the tournament. The Gilas side, at the moment is hanging since Reyes declared stepping down from coaching, shortly after steering the Philippines to a 96-75 demolition of China at the close of their 2023 FIBA World Cup campaign on Saturday night at the Big Dome.
