Australia's newly minted cybersecurity coordinator pleads with companies not to pay ransoms, saying doing so risks making the nation a rich target for cybercrime.

In the wake of those breaches, the government announced it would scrap the former Coalition government's $1.7 billion cybersecurity plan and rewrite cyber laws to provide more options for federal government intervention.

She has hinted at the possibility of including customer data and systems in the definition of critical infrastructure under the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act to allow governments to intervene in major breaches. Air Marshal Goldie said the cybersecurity threat had worsened since last year as the frequency and intensity of attacks had grown.
