Shadow Veteran Affairs Minister Barnaby Joyce says it is “counterintuitive” to raise the minimum pay for temporary skilled visa holders following the critical report of Australia’s migration system.
“You’re basically saying for someone to make beds in the motel which we can’t get anyone to do – if you put the wage up well the only way they can get it is they put your motel bill up,” Mr Joyce told Sky News Australia.
“We should be logical like they are in so many other countries where people are happy to get paid the wages worth so much to them – it’s better than the life they had, and we get a job done that won’t get done unless you want to pay exorbitant wages. “There’s no trick to this – it just goes straight back on your bill, straight back on your food bill, straight back on your motel bill.”
