The pay gap is not the only gap women are facing and dealing with at work
It’s easy to understand why this finding is getting so much attention. It’s shocking and runs counter to the idea of the gender wage gap, which has held that a woman makes 73 cents to a man’s dollar for the same workBut that’s not the real story here. Looking at pay vs. gender alone, no matter how much you try to eliminate other variables, can never tell the whole story.
Google acknowledges this, and they’re right to do so: to see “men are underpaid” as the takeaway here is to miss the point. The disparities don’t always look like overt acts of discrimination. More often, it takes the form of microaggressions, which contribute to larger systemic issues that we show up in other kinds of gaps.
