Now that he’s gone, it could be a catalyst for others to follow. At the very least, several thirtysomethings will be considering their futures more intensely as a direct result of McCarthy’s decision.
In terms of an all-time Dublin team, it would only be a matter of where, not whether, to pick James McCarthy.
For the record, as Fenton and Mullins couldn’t be accommodated anywhere but midfield, you’d probably have to slot McCarthy in at No 5. He had the pedigree, of course, with his father John part of the great Dublin team of the ‘70s, while his mother, Marian, is a proud Offaly woman who was ever-present at his games. James was also a very good soccer player and athlete, particularly in cross-country running, and we’re just lucky that he went with football. I only wish he was a few years younger so that I could have called on him in my time.
For him, along with Cluxton and Mick Fitzsimons to get that ninth All-Ireland last year, surpassing a famous Kerry quintet, would have been a fitting way for him to finish and, maybe with hindsight, he’ll wish that he had.
