PETALING JAYA: Patriotism can motivate a national athlete to go all out for their country and succeed on the world stage.

As all Malaysians joined in the National Day celebrations, shuttlers M. Thinaah and Ng Tze Yong shared their thoughts on representing the country in international tournaments and how much the support from fans had fuelled their hunger to succeed.

The 24-year-old admitted that though the fans’ expectations had also increased the pressure on the pair in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in July, they had to learn to manage it. “Then our coach told us to just enjoy the game and focus on each point. And the support we had been getting in the form of messages from fans on social media really fired us up as we knew we were not alone in wanting to win.
