PATH riders will see some results of a $1 billion plan that will reduce crowding with bigger stations to run longer trains.
and in 2023, the rest of those cars will be delivered. PATH will embark on a pilot after that to test a new tap-and-go fare system to pay by chip embedded credit or debit card or smartphone.
The goal was to ease the overcrowding seen on PATH platforms in 2019 that led to commuter complaints about that and trains that arrived in station already filled to the doors. Increasing the frequency of train service by 10% was the first step taken in 2019, DeGraffe said. Journal Square station in Jersey City required minor work, to move fencing and adjusting the signal system to provide room for nine-car trains on the existing platform, McShane said.
“We tunneled through 100 feet between the platforms to create an area of refuge so passengers can exit to the adjacent platform,” he said. The heavy excavation will be competed next month.”The World Trade Center station was rebuilt after 9/11 to have longer platforms, he said. No platform work is planned at Newport Station, which also is constrained, he said. Hurricane Sandy resiliency work is wrapping up there.
