We chat with first-time filmmaker Celine Song about how she incorporated Korean cultural concepts like 인연 (inyun) into her A24 film about an immigrant's connection to home:

Past Lives, the latest A24 offering, will see a wide release on June 23 after weeks of a successful limited run and high praise on the festival circuit. Penned by playwright Celine Song, the movie also serves as her feature film debut and is solid proof that she will have a thriving cinematic career. The story centers on childhood friends Nora and Hae Sung who are separated when Nora and her mother leave South Korea for Canada.

Celine Song: I think that when I had this inspiration for this movie, and then I started just working on it, you're always hoping that this is going to get made and going to be seen by the world. Because I believe that it is a story that is worth telling; that it's a story that I care about. But I think that you don't really know until you're able to be there, so I'm sitting here now, and I'm just so happy that it's going to be out in the world.

Celine Song: I think that it is a pretty commonplace word in Korea. It really is true when Nora says to Arthur, her future husband, that it is a word that you say in Korean to seduce someone because it kind of is like that. You can sort of say it's like, "Oh, hey, we must be in inyun. That's why we must be like this.
