A nature park named for Hendrick Arnold will open this summer, even as the history of the mixed-race scout and spy of the Texas Revolution is being rewritten.

A nature park set to open this summer will be named for Hendrick Arnold, the subject of this bronze statue by artist Ed Dwight that was unveiled last year at the Alamo. It will be along the Medina River, in Southwest Bexar County not far from where he is buried. A North Texas scholar is rewriting the history of Arnold, who played a key role in the December 1835 Battle of Bexar and was a spy at the Battle of San Jacinto.

“All historians have a handful of things that’ll haunt us. This is one of those,” said Jessica Brannon-Wranosky, who holds the title of distinguished professor of digital humanities and history at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Hendrick Arnold is buried with seven family members in a cemetery in Southwest Bexar County. A 1936 Texas centennial marker acknowledges his service in the December 1835 Battle of Bexar. It will have limited parking and trails this summer, then picnic tables and other amenities coming in the next year, said Kristen Hansen, the river authority’s deputy director of parks and recreation.

SAWS hopes to close on the latest deal by early September. It calls for 40 percent of the land, including the cemetery, to be preserved in its natural state, although “nature trails and related amenities” are permitted. Kay Hindes, a semi-retired former San Antonio city archaeologist, has raised concerns for years about the cemetery, which is separated from the river’s north bank by a two-tier overlook. She’s worried about damage to the graves from development or flooding.

Fly, who was invited by SAWS to provide advice on preservation of the Arnold site, agrees the area around the cemetery needs to be carefully studied before any construction of trails or other changes begin. A survey of heritage trees conducted decades ago could help determine where other burials or archaeological remnants exist, he said.
