It's good that Sen. Gopal has proposed a bill to ensure districts post their sex education curriculum on a website where parents can see it.

Learning to be accepting of differences and respectful of gay families and transgender kids is non-negotiable. Fox News and its hosts like Tucker Carlson – a man who recently touted “testicle tanning” on his show – are no doubt playing a cynical game when they stoke fear about sex education in our schools.

Some of the sample materials posted online as a resource for teachers and distributed to parents in Westfield were too specific, as Sen. Holly Schepisi, a Republican, pointed out.

The state should also take another look, because it’s reasonable to question how detailed these discussions of gender, body parts and sexuality should be in the early grades. Most parents support quality, comprehensive sex education, polls show, but it can get dicier when you get down to specifics. Research shows that with quality sex education, kids are less likely to be bullied, less likely to commit suicide, and more likely to be confident and stay in school. Yet to achieve these outcomes, programs need to start early and extend across the grades, experts say. It can’t just happen in one high school health class.
