The two schools are part of a rezoning plan by the district as a way to balance overcrowding on the city’s west side and deal with slow enrollments in the east.
The Boundary Adjustment Proposal will uproot the teachers and staff at George J. Anderson and D.L. Rountree Elementary Schools at the end of this academic year. Many of these teachers and staff members have worked in these beloved schools for decades and will face a choice of whether to completely start over at a new school in an unknown position or become a ‘staffing efficiency,’” Barnard wrote in the GoFundMe summary.
“They’ve been given no info on where they are going to be, no info about their jobs or if they will have jobs,” Barnard said. The lone vote against the proposal came from trustee Vatsa Ramanathan, who resigned on the spot and walked out after the vote. Barnard said any employee from the schools being closed will receive money from the fundraiser, whether a janitor, a principal or teachers.
