Parent-teacher groups in Malaysia are urging for more specific nutritional guidelines for school canteen operators. They argue that the current guidelines, which focus on serving size and total calories, are too vague and fail to address concerns about meal quality and consistency across schools. They advocate for detailed guidelines on portion sizes, mandatory inclusion of fruits and vegetables, and limitations on processed foods.
ByPETALING JAYA: Nutritional guidelines for canteen operators to prepare meals for students should be more detailed, says parent-teacher groups.
“Specific guidelines on portion sizes, mandatory inclusion of fruits and vegetables, and limitations on processed foods would be a step in the right direction,” said SK USJ 12 Parents and Teacher Association chairman Singam Muniandy. He said the Health Ministry’s guidelines on healthy eating in schools should also take into account what children eat at home.
Melaka Action Group for Parents in Education chairman Mak Chee Kin agreed. He said appointing a PTA member into a sub-committee to monitor meals at school canteens would be helpful. “Operators have to make expensive bids to win the right to sell at canteens and pass the cost to parents or children,” he added.
