Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte said he is not against the proposal to call for a constitutional convention (con-con), but he thinks it is untimely as the country is facing more pressing issues.
In a statement, Duterte explained his “no” vote to Resolution of Both Houses No. 6, which calls for a con-con.
“This is to express our irresolution with the immediate approval of RBH No. 6. To reiterate, we are not in opposition against the said measure per se, but we suppose that it is not timely, our country is facing more pressing social and economic issues, like inflation and poverty among others, that we need to prioritize,” he said.
“Billions to be allocated for a constitutional convention could be allocated instead to other programs intended to improve the living conditions of thousands of Filipino families,” he added.It is still unclear if Duterte’s no vote to RBH No. 6 was registered. Plenary notes still indicate the 301-6-1 vote.- Camarines Sur 3rd District Rep. Gabriel Bordado Jr.- Basilan Rep. Mujiv Hataman- Negros Oriental 3rd District Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. abstained.
The House approval came less than two months since the Committee on Constitutional Amendments began public consultations on charter change at the Batasang Pambansa and select venues in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Details of the con-con, such as the funding and qualifications of delegates, are in accompanying measure House Bill 7532 now in plenary debates.
