JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor Fisheries Department has suggested replacing and treating the sea water at Pantai Lido as an immediate measure to prevent further mass fish deaths in the area.
The department’s director, Zamani Omar, said a water analysis report on Aug 28 showed high ammonia and phosphate content in the water, believed to be due to the decomposition of fish carcasses. “The situation will be worse if domestic waste-water also flows into the pond and threatens other aquatic life,” he said in a statement today.
On the long-term plan, he said more efficient irrigation routes should be constructed to facilitate the flow of water in and out according to the tide, and prevent domestic waste from accumulating at one place and affecting the quality of water for aquatic life, he added. Mass fish deaths were reported on Aug 28 and Sept 6 at Pantai Lido and an irrigation canal near the Sultanah Aminah Hospital.
