Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the inquiry would focus on teenagers and children saying she had heard reports of students 'vaping during lunch breaks'.

Ms Palaszczuk appeared on ABC News on Monday morning, a day after revealing the inquiry, where she revealed the extent of the crisis.

Nicotine vapes are illegal in Queensland without a prescription, but evidence of misleading labelling emerged through an August 2022 crackdown in Western Australia which revealed more than two thirds of the e-cigarettes and vapes seized contained nicotine despite claiming not to. Vape fluid, also known as e-juice, often contains a variety of artificial flavours and has sometimes been found to include harmful chemicals like nail polish remover.

"That is very, very concerning, so we do need to shine a light on what is inside these e-cigarettes," she said. "There's always more to do, but the reality is, we don't want to be here in 10, 20, 30 years' time looking back and thinking 'if only'." The announcement has broad support in the Sunshine State with Cancer Council research suggesting more than 80 per cent of Queenslanders wanting the government to act on vaping.
