Pakistani YouTuber Rajab Butt, known for his family-centric vlogs, avoided jail time after accepting a lion cub as a wedding gift. The incident sparked controversy and led to police confiscating the cub. Instead of facing a fine or prison sentence, Butt agreed to create monthly animal rights videos for a year.

A Pakistani YouTube star, Rajab Butt, who received a lion cub as a wedding gift, has avoided jail time by agreeing to create monthly animal rights videos for a year. Butt, one of the country's most popular social media personalities, received the cub during his lavish wedding celebrations in Lahore in December 2024. The incident sparked public outcry and led to police raiding his home and confiscating the cub, which was found to be in poor condition due to the cold weather.

Butt pleaded guilty to possessing an undocumented wild animal. Instead of facing a possible fine or two-year prison sentence, the judge imposed a more unique punishment. Butt must regularly produce and share five-minute videos focused on animal welfare on his platform for the next year. He admitted in court that accepting the lion cub and subsequently promoting it online was a poor example. His usual content typically revolves around his family's daily life, from mundane events to extravagant purchases. The lion cub, estimated to have cost between US$2,500 and US$2,900, was likely taken from its mother while still nursing. Tanvir Janjua, a veteran wildlife official, condemned the practice, emphasizing the moral and legal wrongfulness of separating a cub from its mother. The incident highlighted the broader issue of private ownership of big cats in Pakistan, where they are often seen as symbols of wealth and status. This trend has led to numerous incidents involving dangerous encounters between lions and people. A week after Butt's arrest, an adult lion escaped from its enclosure in Lahore, roaming through residential streets before being fatally shot by a security guard. This incident fueled public outrage and calls for stricter regulations on big cat ownership.Pakistan has already implemented a ban on displaying lions at political rallies, but new regulations aimed at curbing private ownership of big cats in residential areas are currently being considered in Punjab province. These proposed regulations would require breeders to obtain licenses and possess at least 10 acres of land approved by wildlife officials. Meanwhile, the gifted lion cub is now residing at Lahore's Safari Zoo, under the care of handlers and enjoying the open spaces of its enclosure. Janjua, who has dedicated his career to wildlife conservation, has witnessed a decline in attitudes towards animals, despite improvements in laws and regulations. He emphasizes the importance of educating the public about the dangers and ethical implications of keeping wild animals as pets
