Parents and siblings of the 19 students and two teachers killed at Robb Elementary School have found a way to memorialize the loved ones they lost.

Almost a year later, these families still live their lives in T-shirts, buttons or wrist bands bearing the name or image of a child or sibling — visual artifacts that help them repeat to the world who that person was.And most have a version of it on their skin, having decided that a tattoo — painful but permanent — was the best way to memorialize who they lost.

It took time. She had to find the right artist, and Martin Pacheco of San Antonio was in demand. The tattoo stretches the length of her upper left arm and is a rainbow-colored reproduction of Lexi’s work, with her handwriting, “The Best Mom,” at the top and, “I love my mom By: Lexi” below.“She was vibrant, very colorful. She loved bright lights in her room. Her style was colorful, bright, just like her,” Rubio said.

“I don’t think a lot of people knew Lexi liked to draw or anything like that,” Rubio said. “So I like that people got to know that little side of her.”Veronica Mata shows the tattoo she got to honor her daughter Tess Mata, one of 19 children killed in the Robb Elementary massacre in Uvalde. She said it’s on her wrist so she can easily look down at it and feel Tess with her during the day.

Jacklyn Cazares, 9, and Eliahna Torres, 10, Tess’s friends who also were killed in the shooting, loved butterflies, too. Tyshawn, a tattoo artist in Uvalde, completed all of her tattoos and those of many other parents after the tragedy.
