Ryan Flaherty appears to be serving again as acting manager as Padres begin four-game series at Chicago Cubs
arrived Monday at Wrigley Field with the expectation that quality control coach Ryan Flaherty would continue as the acting manager.
The 35-year-old former infielder was tentatively scheduled to address the media ahead of the 5:05 p.m. first pitch.between games during Saturday’s doubleheader. Pitchers Mike Clevinger and Adrián Morejón to date are the only players impacted by COVID this season. Christenson and third base coach Matt Williams previously negotiated COVID protocols, while Melvin missed time last month because of prostate surgery.
The Padres went 6-3 in the games Melvin missed last month. They dropped the first two games with Flaherty as acting manager, falling 6-2 in Saturday’s nightcap and 4-2 in Sunday’s series finale against Colorado. Flaherty serving as acting manager allows Williams, a former big-league manager, to continue in his capacity as the team’s third base coach.
