Catcher Luis Campusano comes off the injured list, as Austin Nola optioned to Triple-A; Rougned Odor designated for assignment
“Campy is going to get his share of games,” Melvin said. “We’ll make the best lineup we can we can for a particular day. He will play .”
The veteran Odor, who made the team after signing a minor-league contract in spring training, had some big hits and was one of the Padres’ most productive hitters for a month. He ranked second on the team with a .906 OPS in 65 plate appearances from May 2 through June 2. His 15 RBIs in that span were also second most on the team. But he has batted just .200 with a .590 OPS in 58 plate appearances since then.
“Changing the mix,” Padres President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller said. “Kohlwey and Rivas, got two guys who are that contact at-bats, left-handed. Kohlwey infield, outfield versatility. Rivas a really strong defender. He continues to swing the bat well.”Nola was considered by the Padres to be a main target in a seven-player trade with the Mariners at the deadline in 2020. That deal also brought the Padres relievers Austin Adams and Dan Altavila, who have both long since been released.
Nola was the Padres’ primary catcher in the regular season and caught all 12 postseason games in 2022. He was the starting catcher in 32 of the Padres’ first 48 games this season but had started just 14 of the 46 leading up to Tuesday.
