Balance of playing time could shift for catchers, as Luis Campusano steps up behind plate and Austin Nola struggles at plate
The Padres have reached an early fork in the road with their catchers, one that could at least temporarily see them diverting from the playing time path they have been on.
“Yeah, we might do things a little bit differently,” manager Bob Melvin said after the game. “He had a really good spring swinging the bat. Then he had the nose issue and has not swung it as well since. … We’ll see how the how it breaks up as we go forward.”Nola, who suffered a fractured nose when he was hit by a pitch on March 19 and missed most of the final week of spring training, began the season 3-for-12 with two walks. He was 0-for-3 Wednesday in his fifth straight game without a hit.
