Former Braves starter competing for swing role with Padres impressive in first outing; Jose Azocar keeps up in roster race

A.J. Preller was the Rangers’ Director of International Scouting when Julio Teheran was a 16-year-old about to sign as a free agent out of Colombia.

On Sunday, he made his Padres debut. It was his first time pitching in a major league uniform since 2021, as he spent last season toiling in an independent league and for two teams in Mexico, including the Toros de Tijuana. Teheran, who has started 236 games in his 11 seasons, made six consecutive opening-day starts for the Braves from 2014-19. He was an All-Star twice in that span.

“Last year was a tough year,” he said. “I was 31 years old. I didn’t sign with anybody. I went to the Atlantic League and then I went to Mexico. When I was there, I feel that everything was better. I don’t know if it was the situation. I worked hard. I worked harder than ever. I feel my pitches were better, and I was like, ‘Why? There’s no reason for me to step away if I feel that I’m still getting better.
