Garrett Cooper's first home run with Padres is not close to enough to prevent third consecutive loss
“Until we’re out, we’re out,” Manny Machado said Sunday afternoon before the Padres departed Arizona for San Diego at the end of a brutal road trip. “We’re gonna go out and compete every single day. We’re never gonna let up. … Whatever happens, happens. If we make the postseason, we make it. And if we don’t, we move on. But we still have the mentality of going out there and competing and trying to make a run.
Reality has played out differently. Every one of those teams has a better record than the Padres, and the longest homestand of the season seems like a last stand. They were down 1-0 after two innings and 4-0 after five, managed three hits against rookie Grayson Rodriguez in his career-high seven innings and four hits in all. And thanks in some measure to three double-play grounders, it all happened in 2 hours, 16 minutes.
The loss to the leaders of the American League East, coupled with a Marlins victory over the Astros, dropped the Padres to 6½ games out of the NL’s final playoff spot. Before a pair of one-out walks in the ninth inning, the Padres’ only hint at getting back in the game and avoiding what would become a third consecutive loss and eighth loss in 10 games came on Garrett Cooper’s home run in the sixth inning, his first since being acquired in an Aug. 1 trade with the Marlins. The Orioles took a 1-0 lead when Ryan O’Hearn led off the second inning by turning on a sweeper on the inside edge and sending it just over the wall in the right-field corner.
