Sanchez, who far outperformed expectations after he was signed off waivers, hit by a pitch in eighth inning

The Padres lost another key player Wednesday, as a season that was already doomed continued to fold in on itself.

Catcher Gary Sanchez, who helped turn the position from a liability to a strength by hitting 19 home runs and throwing out nine would-be base stealers after being claimed off waivers on May 29, suffered a fractured right wrist when he was hit by a 98 mph fastball from Jeff Hoffman in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s 5-1 loss to the Phillies.

“Sick to your stomach,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. “He’s put together an incredible year. Tough travels to begin with. Gets here and is impactful right away, fits into his team like a glove. Just a lot of great stuff he’s accomplished this year and with not too much time left to have , it’s a tough pill to swallow for everybody. He’s one of everybody’s favorite in the clubhouse. … and has been very, very productive. So unfortunate.

“The guy came in with a mission, and he started balling out since day one,” Fernando Tatis Jr. said Wednesday. “He became one of the best catchers in the game right away.”Sánchez is the second Pades regular in less than two weeks to be lost to a fractured right wrist when hit by a pitch. First baseman Jake Cronenworth suffered his break on Aug. 25 in Milwaukee.

The Padres, who are nine games below .500 with 19 games remaining, are also without starting pitchers Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove and reliever Steven Wilson .
