Anthony Rizzo's discussion of his own post-concussion symptoms led to Austin Nola, Padres down a path that unearthed oculomotor dysfunction diagnosis
The pitch that broke Padres catcher Austin Nola’s nose in March is a clear marker in his 2023 campaign, but he cleared concussion protocol before returning for opening day and generally chalked up how he was feeling throughout a trying season to wear and tear.
Nola had not played since Aug. 2 and was finally placed on El Paso’s injured list Saturday. The official diagnosis is oculomotor dysfunction, a vision issue that impacts the brain’s ability to coordinate eye movement. It could provide an answer as to why Nola wasn’t tracking the ball as well as he was in spring training.“I’m so thankful to get some clarity on it,” the 33-year-old Nola said by phone. “I just couldn’t figure it out. I just didn’t know why I wasn’t seeing the ball.
Nola went 1-for-3 with a walk in the opener and had three hits in his first 12 at-bats. But his average plummeted quickly after that, entrenching itself well below the Mendoza line as he dismissed using the idea of the pitch off his face as an excuse.
