Pack light and get ready for record-setting crowds when you fly over the winter holidays

Load factors, or the percentage of sits filled by paying passengers, likely are to run above 85% during the holiday travel period. For all practical purposes that means most flights will be packed to full or near-full with passengers. That’s because airlines typically operate very late night flights that are less than half full primarily to get those planes into position to start the next day’s operations. Such high load factors also mean U.S.
“Throughout this year we’ve seen steady gains in air travel demand, and this winter will be no exception” says John Heimlich, A4A’s Vice President and Chief Economist. “Buoyed by a healthy economy and plentiful, affordable air service, travelers once again are expected to take to the skies in record numbers.”
Still, A4A said it expects an average of 2.6 million passengers to take to the skies each day over the holidays, with daily volumes ranging from 2.2 million to 3 million.
