As Hurricane Hilary heads for Mexico’s Baja California, the U.S. National Hurricane Center is predicting “catastrophic and life-threatening flooding” for the peninsula and for the southwestern United States, where it is forecast to make land as a tropical storm on Sunday
Tropical Weather Hilary
The U.S. National Hurricane Center issued tropical storm and potential flood warnings for a wide swath of Southern California from the Pacific coast to interior mountains and deserts. By mid-day Saturday, the storm was centered about 350 miles south-southeast of Punta Eugenia, one of the westernmost spurs on Mexico's southern Baja peninsula. The hurricane was expected to brush past Punta Eugenia before making landfall along a sparsely populated area of the Baja peninsula at a point about 200 miles south of the Pacific port city of Ensenada.
“We are a vulnerable city, being on one of the most visited borders in the world and because of our landscape,” she said. The National Park Service closed Joshua Tree National Park and Mojave National Preserve to keep people from becoming stranded amid flooding. Cities across the region, including in Arizona, were offering sandbags to safeguard properties against floodwaters.
“I urge everyone, everyone in the path of this storm, to take precautions and listen to the guidance of state and local officials,” he said. About 100 people sought refuge at storm shelters in the twin resorts of Los Cabos, at the southern tip of the Baja peninsula, and firefighters used an inflatable boat to rescue a family in San Jose del Cabo, after the resort was hit by driving rain and wind.
