Heading into Friday's games, there had been 15 50-plus scoring performances in the NBA this season. What's going on?
Damian Lillard's 50-point outing in the Portland Trail Blazers' home loss to Cleveland on Thursday seems like just another day in the NBA this season.have become increasingly common, like the coveted no-hitter in last year's MLB season.
It's easy to predict that no NBA player will ever hold up a handwritten"100" note after a game like Chamberlain did in March 1962. But it's also getting easier to predict when a player is likely to score at least half that much during a given week this season. Mitchell made history scoring 71 points and willed the Cavaliers' to victory in overtime by beating the Chicago Bulls by 11. That's the seventh-highest ever in a game, the most since Kobe Bryant's 81 at home in the Los Angeles Lakers' win over Toronto in January 2006.
“You don’t go in – maybe ‘Bron for his birthday when he said that he was going for 40 – but you don’t into it saying like ‘Tonight’s like a 50-ball,'" Mitchell told The Republic after Cleveland's win at Phoenix on Jan. 8. "I was put in the right situations to make the right plays. I usually just want to make the right play every time, but once I get it going a little bit, shooting over a hand – it’s the right play.”
"But I don’t know. I think it’s just where we are. Book had 58 … and then Luka has 60. The guy who’s going under the radar is Giannis putting up 40 and 20 like it’s 20 and 10. I have no idea. I don’t know if it’s the pace, the officiating, I don’t know. It’s just happening a lot.”In the 2012-13 season, just three players had 50-point games and team were scoring an average total 98.1 points.
"If you look at the teams, the teams are really good, too. There’s not a lot of just bad teams out there. I also think the rules are set up for guys to be able to play a little bit more freely. The spacing on the floor with everybody playing a lot of small ball gives guys opportunities. Games ending with teams scoring under 90 are now considered low compared to when they were the norm 20 years ago.
