The controversy in Tioga borough has resulted in Timothy Loehmann withdrawing his police officer application and two council members resigning.
Officials in a Tioga County borough violated state law by not doing the required background check before Timothy Loehmann was hired as a police officer, the state attorney general says., caused controversy in the borough of about 700 near the New York State line because he is the former Cleveland police officer who shot and killed Tamir Rice in 2014.
“To be clear, failure to thoroughly check a potential hire’s background, including searching the database for any past disciplinary activities, is a violation of state law,” he wrote. Mayor David Wilcox who swore in Loehmann, said Saturday he was unaware of the correct last name until it appeared with a video of the ceremony that was posted on social media.
The borough, which provides police coverage to Tioga Twp., has been without an officer for several months.
