Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman, a Republican, sent a letter to House Majority Leader Matt Bradford, a Democrat, telling him there is only one remaining option the Senate will consider when it comes to moving up next year's presidential primary date to the third Tuesday in March and it's one the House rejected last week. It passed a separate bill on a party-line 102-100 vote to move up the primary to April 2 and sent that over to the Senate. In his letter, Pittman said the clock has run out on negotiating a date on which both chambers can agree. He said only one option remains. That entails the House stripping out the changes it made to the Senate-passed bill and voting it so it could go immediately to Gov. Josh Shapiro for enactment.
“The date of March 19 was agreed to in the Senate after much deliberation, as it respects the Jewish holiday of Passover and the Christian holiday of Easter,” Pittman stated. “While the date of April 2 has also been considered, the Senate cannot support such a move due to the disruption preparations would cause to the Easter holiday weekend observances.”
