Agriculture officials assure chicken and eggs sold in stores are safe but could get pricey.

Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said state officials are on high alert with the first confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza appearing at a farm in Lancaster County on Saturday. April 18, 2022 Commonwealth Media ServicesWith a confirmed positive case of the highly pathogenic avian influenza appearing in the heart of Pennsylvania’s poultry country, state officials are on high alert to try to prevent it from spreading to more poultry farms.

The infected farm had 1.4 million birds that had to be euthanized, and is now undergoing a lengthy testing regimen to ensure there is no further avian influenza in that environment, Redding said. With positive avian influenza cases being confirmed in other states including most of Pennsylvania’s neighbors, Dr. Alex Hamberg, assistant director of the Bureau of Animal Health and Diagnostic Services, said the department along with industry leaders and poultry farmers have been strengthening biosecurity plans and making emergency preparations in the event it turned up in the commonwealth.

In Pennsylvania, the first confirmed cases of infected wild birds – a bald eagle in Chester County and four ducks in Venango County – were discovered in March, he said. The state has held $2 million in reserve since 2016 to respond to an avian influenza outbreak. It has established an inter-agency animal health task force and developed an animal health diagnostic lab system that shares real-time information between the department’s lab in Harrisburg, one at Penn State and one at University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School.
