Pa. House passes Democrats’ $46.5 billion spending plan; GOP calls it unsustainable
Along with the general fund, the legislation also creates special funds to pay for state police, school construction and home repairs boosting the total spend to nearly $46.5 billion – a 13% increase over this year’s $40.5 billion budget.
“Now as this process moves on to the Senate, we look forward to continuing to work with Republicans and Democrats alike to bring people together and deliver a budget that addresses the most pressing issues facing our commonwealth.” House Appropriations Committee Chairman Jordan Harris, D-Philadelphia, described the Democratic-backed House budget as building on the governor’s “solid plan for Pennsylvania.”
House Republicans, however, said it overspends anticipated revenue growth and maintains a $2 billion structural deficit that will eat up the Rainy Day Fund and other reserves in less than five years.
