The boy’s mom was meticulous about locking her gun. The man watching her son that day wasn’t, police say.
After the unsupervised 5-year-old shot his index finger after getting his hands on a loaded handgun lying unattended in the Johnstown area home, the man who was supposed to be watching him is facing criminal charges., 38-year-old Melvin Nelson Jr. of Johnstown faces charges related to endangering the welfare of children and to persons not to possess, use, manufacture, control, sell, or transfer a firearm.
She told officers that she and Nelson were the only ones who knew the combination to the safe. Nelson was supposed to be watching her son and several kids that day. But police investigators say Nelson wasn’t at the home when the shooting occurred. Instead, he was across the street at another house. But before he left, police say Nelson removed the gun from the safe, loaded it and then left it lying where the boy could access it while the child was unattended.
