Exclusive: Owen Wilson reflects on his role in 1999’s TheHaunting and teases if things go differently for his character in HauntedMansion:

Trailers for Haunted Mansion showcase a stacked cast featuring Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis, Rosario Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, and Winona Ryder. Haunted Mansion also stars Owen Wilson as Father Kent, a man who attempts to ward off the film’s dangerous ghosts and ghouls.
Haunted Mansion isn’t the first time Owen Wilson has played a character trapped in a big, spooky house. Wilson faced ghosts in 1999’s The Haunting, which did not go well for his character Luke Sanderson. Speaking on the subject during a recent interview with Screen Rant, Owen Wilson hinted at the fate of his Haunted Mansion character Father Kent, comparing it to his last foray into the genre:
Owen Wilson: The last time I was really in this kind of genre my character didn't make it through, and that’s always a little bit unnerving because there's something in us that wants to survive. I got a little bit further along in the story with this one. Did I make it to the end? You know, that's… I can't really say too much about that.
Owen Wilson’s Last Haunted Mansion Story 1999’s The Haunting was one of many adaptations of The Haunting of Hill House, the novel by Shirley Jackson. Just like Haunted Mansion, The Haunting boasted a talented cast that included Owen Wilson, Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Bruce Dern, and was directed by Speed and Twister director Jan de Bont.
Although The Haunting found an audience and made $100 million over its production budget, it was panned by critics after its release. In 2023, The Haunting sits at a 17% critic score and a 28% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Thankfully, early social media reactions for Haunted Mansion seem to point to a better reception for Owen Wilson’s return to the paranormal — even if Father Kent ends up sharing the same fate as Luke Sanderson.
